Research

These are the research projects I have been involved in from Retopology, 3D Scanning, 3D modeling, and Motion Capture.

Dig hill 80.

Collaboration between an international trans-disciplinary team of archeologists, historians, and artists. The goal was to excavate and digitally preserve a World War 1 trench fortress found near the village of Wijtschate, Belgium. My role in the project was to retopologize 3D hand scanned artifacts from the site and render the models, for an immersive educational experience.  This research was presented in London, New Zealand, and Japan.

Here is the official website and the kickstarter page which funded the project.

Motion capture Sports simulation.

Research project collecting motion capture data of basketball soccer and football players, for use in studying sports injuries and providing virtual training simulations. My role in the project was modeling realistic characters and setting them up for motion capture animation.  Also modifying the previous pipeline to work for the whole team while exploring options such as simulated clothing.  This project also aims for Virtual Reality simulation.

SDU/VT Bioinspired Engineering Research Collaborative.

Collaborative fellowship between Shandong University, Brunei University and Virginia Tech.  This projects aim is to break down bats flight capabilities and researching them for use in other applications such as drones.  My role in this project was scanning environments that bats were known to be emerging from during their feedings.  Using FARO Focus 3D Laser Scanner, I scanned 15 different locations across different parts of China.  I then meshified some of the best scans for use in short animation for the lab.  Also, my colleagues developed microphone and camera arrays to track bats in these same environments, which I helped in testing and suggesting ideas for better implementation.  During the end of this project, I presented my findings at Virginia Techs Undergraduate Research Fair in 2019.
